Cheryl Brown Obituary

On September 1, 1953, Cheryl Louise Watson Brown was born to the late James and Eloise Watson in Philadelphia, PA.  She departed this life on Sunday, January 24, 2021, at Landmark Hospital in Savannah, GA.

Cheryl was born and lived in the area affectionately called “The Village”, 26th and Hagert St., and then some years later moved to Douglas Street (Strawberry Mansion) where she was also reared by her stepfather, Carl E. Smith, and mother until adulthood. Cheryl was the eldest daughter in her blended family that included a merry bunch of 8 siblings.

Cheryl was educated in the Philadelphia Public School system where she received her diploma from Simon Gratz in 1971. She went on to employment at Philco as a factory worker, hair stylist, and childcare worker.

In July 1974 she extended her hand to Billy J. Brown, her husband of 46 years, and gained a daughter- Vanessa McClain. To this union they later brought forth two sons- Billy D. Brown and Brian C. Brown.

Cheryl loved music and dancing, cherry jubilee lipstick, thin eyebrows and large hoop earrings were her favorite!

In 1983, Cheryl and her family relocated to Statesboro, GA where she and her husband reared their children. While living in Georgia, Cheryl spent her time tending to her family and continued to work various customer service related jobs. She befriended and enjoyed the company of family and friends and was lovingly known as the “Mouth of the South” because of her gift of gab.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents- Eloise and James Watson; stepfather- Carl E. Smith; brothers- Timothy Harrell, Vernon R. Smith, and Carl Smith Jr.; and two grandson- Reuben Mikell and Liam Brown.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, Mr. Billy J. Brown of Statesboro, GA; one daughter, Vanessa (Leon) McClain of Philadelphia PA; two sons, Billy D.
